Up, up and away went Ashakiran, proving that rhinoceroses can fly.
Well, sort of.
The Buffalo Zoo's 2-year-old female greater Indian rhino actually soared from the pavement Tuesday in a 4,000-pound custom-welded steel cage. A construction crane lifted the container over treetops and set it down gently on a flatbed trailer for the trip to the Toronto Zoo, where Ashakiran - Indian for "ray of hope" - will spend the foreseeable future on breeding loan.
The transaction indeed offers a ray of hope for the rare one-horned mammals, whose population, due to poaching and loss of habitat, was down to just 600 as recently 1975.
