Associated Press Writer GAUHATI, INDIA – Poachers
electrocuted two rare rhinoceroses at a wildlife park Friday by stringing
a live
wire across a herd path the animals were known to follow.

Bora, an official at the Pabitora reserve, said the poachers extracted
the horn of one rhino before fleeing.
"
The poachers drew live wires from a high voltage electric transmission
line that pass through our reserve and put them in a known rhino
track to kill the two animals," Bora said.
The Pabitora park and surrounding reserves are home to about 1,800
one-horned rhinos. Poachers have killed more than 70 rhinos in
Assam state during the past four years.
The animal's horn sells for about
$13,000 a pound and is used in traditional Asian medicine to treat
illnesses ranging from fevers
to nosebleeds.
An Indian army statement said Friday
that separatist guerrillas in the northeast region are involved
in a flourishing
but illegal wildlife
trade to raise money for weapons and explosives.
