Nairobi, Kenya, 03/01 - The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and Interpol have formulated new strategies to combat international wildlife and environmental crime which has become a serious global concern, Kenyan Tourism and Wildlife Minister Morris Dzoro said here on Tuesday.
Dzoro said wildlife related crime was getting more sophisticated, going beyond Kenya`s borders.
Cross-border, regional and international linkages are therefore crucial in dealing with the problem, the minister told a workshop for investigation and intelligence officers involved in wildlife observation and management.
The workshop has attracted 26 participants from Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), the Kenya police force and officials from the Lusaka Agreement Task force, a regional body involved in the conservation of flora and fauna in the eastern and southern African region.
He observed that Africa in general and Kenya in particular was a target of illegal trophy trafficking, particularly ivory and rhino horns and trade in live animals like reptiles.
The minister cited the prolonged drought, which has also led to an increase in deaths of wild animals "whose trophies have fallen in the wrong hands."
He commended Interpol's working group on wildlife crime in its efforts to tackle
smuggling, money laundering, weapon offences and drugs which he said was threatening
tourism and our national economy in this country.
IFAW sponsored the workshop
following an Ecomessage Award of over 2.1 million shillings that KWS won in May
2005 (1 USD = 72 shs).
